Christmas 2011 was Superdrug’s biggest-ever for cosmetics sales with more product sold in the last few days of the year than any other week in Superdrug’s history. While sales during the period (November 27 - December 31, 2011) rose 2.5% across the retailer’s 900 UK and Southern Ireland stores, its online operation was up an eye-watering 94.9%.
Superdrug’s Christmas trading figures were released along with the news that Jeremy Seigal, CEO of A.S. Watson Group UK, owner of Superdrug, The Perfume Shop and Savers, had decided to step-down from his position and Friday January 13 was his last day at the company. As a result, Joey Wat, previously Chief Operating Officer, has been appointed Managing Director of the UK operation.
Speaking about Superdrug’s Christmas performance in which 1.5 million bottles of fragrance were sold, Steve Jebson, Superdrug Commercial Director, said: "Our Christmas trading figures show a solid performance during challenging times. 2011 saw the launch of our loyalty card, the Beautycard, and during December one in five transactions were linked to a card showing a good level of customer participation in the scheme.”
Recent Kantar data (covering a 12 week period ending 25th December 2011) shows Superdrug has grown market share by 0.5 per cent; a higher level of growth than any other major player in the health and beauty sector. The same research shows Superdrug growth (11.4 per cent) is over three times that of the market (3.7 per cent).
