An advertisement for Diorshow New Look Mascara starring Natalie Portman, has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority after a complaint reportedly received from a rival cosmetic firm. The digital image showing Natalie Portman’s natural lashes applied with the Christian Dior product had been retouched during production and in its ruling the ASA said that it "had not seen sufficient evidence to show that the post-production retouching on Natalie Portman's lashes in the ad did not exaggerate the likely effects of the product". Burberry has confirmed that it will directly operate its fragrance and beauty business as its fifth product division alongside accessories and women's, men's and children's apparel, when its license agreement with Interparfums comes to an end on March 31, 2013. Angela Ahrendts, Chief Executive Officer, commented: "Directly operating fragrance and beauty is in line with our strategy of taking greater control over our brand. There are significant opportunities to accelerate the growth of this business over time, leveraging our infrastructure and that of existing key suppliers and distributors."
In her most recent blog Imogen Matthews has welcomed the approach to prestige beauty retailing as exemplified by BeautyMart, M&S Your Beauty and Selfridges' Beauty Workshop. "For too long, premium retailers have focused on the exclusive in-store experience, but that’s not what most consumers want," she says as this leads to high-pressure selling.
